AEO for Dental Practices: Being the Answer When Patients Ask AI

SEO has a younger sibling, and it is growing up fast. Answer engine optimisation, usually shortened to AEO, is the work of making your practice discoverable when a patient asks a question and an AI answers it in sentences rather than links.

That happens in more places every month: Google’s AI overviews at the top of search results, ChatGPT and Gemini in a patient’s pocket, and voice assistants in their kitchen. When one of those tools says “practices in your area offer this treatment, and here is what to expect”, it built that answer from somewhere. AEO is the work of being the somewhere.

How AI decides what to say

AI assistants do not rank pages the way classic search does. They read and synthesise. When a patient asks whether dental implants hurt, the AI draws on pages that answer that exact question clearly, from sources that look credible and consistent.

That preference has a pattern to it, and the pattern is learnable:

  • Direct answers. Pages that answer the question in the opening paragraphs, before the background.
  • Clear structure. Headings that name the question, short sections, plain language. Machines quote what they can parse.
  • Consistent facts. The same practice name, address, services and claims everywhere they appear: website, Google Business Profile, directories.
  • Demonstrated expertise. Content clearly written by or for a real practice with real practitioners, not generic filler that could sit on any site.
  • Questions asked in patient language. Patients ask “does a root canal hurt”, not “endodontic treatment overview”. The page that speaks patient earns the quote.

What AEO is not

It is not a trick, and it is not guaranteed. Nobody can promise your practice a place inside an AI answer, and the tools themselves change constantly. Treat anyone selling guaranteed AI placement the way you would treat anyone selling guaranteed Google rankings.

It is also not separate work from good SEO. The habits that make a page quotable by AI, direct answers, clear structure, real expertise, are the same habits Google has rewarded for years. Doing the work once serves both.

The FAQ advantage

One structural habit deserves its own mention: questions and answers. A well-built FAQ, on its own page or inside articles, does two jobs. Patients get their answer, and machines get content shaped exactly like the questions they are being asked, ideally with FAQ schema markup underneath so the structure is explicit.

For a dental practice, the raw material is free. Your front desk hears the questions every day. Writing them down, with clear answers, is the most underrated discoverability work available.

Where to start

A realistic AEO starting point for a busy practice is three moves: keep your Google Business Profile current and answered, make sure your core pages state plainly who you are, where you are and what you do, and publish one article a fortnight that answers a real patient question.

The third move is the one that compounds, and it is the one Trilbii was built to make easy. The Blog Writer creates articles that answer patient questions in your practice’s voice, structured for search engines and AI, with AHPRA advertising guardrails applied as the content is created and your team reviewing everything before it is published.
